Case Study

Re-development of Logistics Systems

SMS Ref #: CS00027

Client Problem

A Government Department required expert assistance in the development of an updated logistics system to promote a cohesive system of ordering, invoicing and delivery.

The Department’s information environment has evolved in an unplanned manner over a number of years. As a result, the Department was experiencing a number of detrimental issues related to technology involved in stock ordering and delivery. SMS was engaged to develop an accurate base architecture and to advise on a roadmap for long term IT-related logistical efficiency.

SMS Approach

SMS conducted a rigorous audit of the current logistics architecture to identify areas for improvement and re-development.

SMS drew upon its expert knowledge of specialist industry best practice to:

  • document current logistical technology environment and process framework
  • identify long term IT requirements through development of a proposed future environment
  • identify gaps between current processes and resources and specific ongoing requirements
  • develop a roadmap for long term success in supply chain management systems, including ordering, warehousing and engineering

Recommendation

SMS produced comprehensive gap analysis on current situation and future requirements to enable the implementation of a planned program for change.

SMS developed and presented a detailed roadmap for IT systems redevelopment, focussing on the:

  • identification of which IT systems to develop and implement
  • process of integration with each other and other business critical functions

Outcome

SMS’s roadmap to address the identified “gaps” was accepted by senior management and implementation began immediately.

The Department now has a blueprint to use as a guide to future decision making in regards to logistics information systems. The work that SMS has undertaken in developing this blueprint has led to an ongoing role in assisting the Department to implement its strategic plans.
